HackSoc, the computer science society
Hello, HackSoc!

It's the final week of term! This will be the last newsletter of 2019, so I hope you have a fantastic break and come back feeling ready for your January exams.

Hoodies

At the beginning of next term, HackSoc will be doing a hoodie order! Hoodies will cost £25 per person, and you can even customise the text on the front.

If you would like a hoodie, please fill in this form!

Talk Submissions

If you'd like to give a talk to our members next term, this is the final week to submit your abstract! Submissions will close on the 9th of December.

The Calendar

CoffeeScript - 12:30, Wed 04/12 - The Glasshouse, Langwith College

Our weekly social on Hes East; enjoy some lunch and have a good chat.

Talk - "Where it all went wrong (or why programming sucks)" by Sam Hand - 18:30, Thu 05/12 - The Pod (CSE/028&083)

The word “programmer” usually refers to a person who instructs a computer through the use of some textual formal language.

To this person computation lives inside of a text file, represented purely as a list of instructions.

Contrast this to the idea of a “user”; someone who similarly instructs a computer to do their bidding. The user, though, achieves this by dynamically interacting with a varied selection of representations of the system - be they textual, visual, or even auditory.

To a user computation takes on a much more rich meaning: it can be represented in a way suitable to the task at hand. However, the power available to them is fundamentally limited. They only have access to the features the programmer of the system chose to include.

This talk will explore the reasons behind this power difference, and maybe even suggest how to fix it, without sacrificing usability.

Board Games and Cake - 19:00, Fri 06/12 - The Pod (CSE/082&083)

One of HackSoc's oldest traditions, where we play many board games and eat plenty of cake! Members are encouraged to bring their own board games and cake if they enjoy the events.
