HackSoc, the computer science society
Hello, HackSoc!

It's an exciting week for HackSoc - it's the week of our AGM! We'll be holding elections for all of our committee positions, and taking proposals for changes to our constituion. For more information, please see below or visit the news article on our website! Please come along to the AGM if you can, as there is a quorum of 20% of our paying members.

As well as the AGM, we've also got our regular social events and a talk about git's internals!

The Calendar

CoffeeScript - 12:30, Wed 26/02 - Hub Café, Ron Cooke Hub

Our weekly social on Hes East; enjoy some lunch and have a good chat.

Talk - "git is not an SCM", and other git trivia by Ash Holland - 19:00, Thu 27/02 - LMB/002A

You might have heard of git, the "distributed version-control system". You might have used git yourself; you might even have come to the talk about git I gave last term. But did you know that, according to git's author, it's not a version-control system at all?

In this talk, I'll explain git's internals – how it actually works under the covers, talking about heads, refs, tree-ishes, @, and various other git concepts. We'll briefly cover git's origins, and the design decisions that made it stand out from other version-control systems, along with a smattering of "interesting" facts about git which you might not have known.

NB: this talk doesn't assume that you know anything about git, but I won't be explaining how to use it. You'll get more out of the talk if you already have some experience of working with git.

Annual General Meeting - 19:00, Fri 28/02 - CSE/102&103

The Annual General Meeting (AGM) is when we elect a whole new committee to run the society for the next year. All positions are up for grabs. Any member may run for any position and all paid members may vote. Voting happens by Single Transferable Vote.

Additionally, members may put forward constitutional amendments to change how the society works. Amendments must be put forward as a list of concrete changes to the text constitution. They will then be debated, changed if needed, and then voted upon.

For more information, please see the news article on our website!

Board Games and Cake - 20:30, Fri 28/02 - CSE/102&103

One of HackSoc's oldest traditions, where we play many board games and eat plenty of cake! Members are encouraged to bring their own board games and cake if they enjoy the events.
